I like to compare my rental Challenger to piloting a boat. This morning, I was reminded that size is relative.
I was going to complain about him taking my favorite spot, but I thought he might just run over my car.
For those who don’t recognize that supertanker, it’s a Ford F-350 Super Duty Crew Cab King Ranch FX4 with an 8' bed. It’s nearly twice as tall and 3' longer than the Challenger.
Dang, that’s big.
The parking lot attendant was a little bent that the guy parked there. The spots on the other side of the aisle are appropriately sized for longer vehicles.

As much as I hate seeing long trucks double-parking, this bothers me more. The aisle should NEVER be blocked. After all, how would you park a limousine- take one parking space and hang the rest out? Hell no. If a vehicle honestly requires two spots to park, then find a place where you can take two spots.

After 10 years the Challenger is still the best looking of the American muscle cars, but my ideal version would be the opposite of what they make, a light weight good
handling version.
![]() 07/11/2018 at 11:23 |
|
It’s annoying, for sure, but not as annoying as people blocking the sidewalk with the front/back end of their car.
![]() 07/11/2018 at 11:23 |
|
I have no problem with that. I just want him to park in a more appropriate spot.
![]() 07/11/2018 at 11:25 |

So basically downsize it? T he car is basica lly made to fit large folks. If it were downsized by 10-15% it’d be lighter and better handling, on par with the Mustang and Camaro probably.
![]() 07/11/2018 at 11:25 |
|
I think the Mustang keeps getting better, but only the most recent Challenger is great looking. The previous version just didn’t seem quite right.

Yes, they should. This happens in my college too, except that the compact spaces are next to a very small path that the trucks block.
![]() 07/11/2018 at 11:30 |

Agreed. Even the Widebody Hellcat version can’t keep up with the lightweights on the road course. But it sure looks nice!

We had a lady trade an ‘18 F250 in with under 200 miles once because “it was bigger than she remembered”. She was scared to drive it for fear of hitting someone.

We have this issue at my office parking garage. The big trucks like to park on the first ramp, causing issues in the most highly-traffic part of the garage. If they just went up to the first deck, they could take two spaces in the center row and nothing would be hanging out in the aisle.
![]() 07/11/2018 at 11:32 |

Same thing. Road, sidewalk, aisle... they’re all for (vehicular or foot) traffic, and should be kept clear. Maybe that’s not always possible when traffic gets heavy, but it shouldn’t be artificially congested by people parking stuff there.
Speaking of which, that space between the parking blocks and the brick wall is supposed to be a sidewalk, isn’t it?
![]() 07/11/2018 at 11:34 |
|
Same in my Uni; plenty of larger spaces that are a bit further away. maybe they should clamp them or something.

YUGE! Wonder what list price is on a land barge like that...
![]() 07/11/2018 at 11:44 |

Yeah down size it a little bit. It would be the most practical
as a daily though with its biggest trunk and biggest back seat for kids. On paper it
seems like a T/A with the performance handling group would be pretty much what I want. I was just ignorant of the T/A and more importantly the “Performance Handling Group” package.
![]() 07/11/2018 at 11:45 |
|
I don’t think that was the intent. The parking blocks are too close to the wall to create a functional sidewalk.
![]() 07/11/2018 at 11:47 |

There is a “Performance Handling Group” package,
that I was ignorant of,
on paper it
seems to be most of
what I want. Throw in the “
Forged Aluminum Wheels”
for decreased unsprung weight and that is 90% of what I am looking for. I could live with that.
![]() 07/11/2018 at 11:49 |

Starts at $60k.
![]() 07/11/2018 at 11:51 |

True, if you treat them as wheel chocks instead of parking borders.
![]() 07/11/2018 at 11:53 |

For such a large truck they are surprisingly
easy to drive. In North Dakota.

I’d like to think anyone’s who bought a truck with an 8' bed is actually using it for work (or serious play) and not just to show off, but who knows.
Making my first foray in the pickup world soon - got a Tacoma TRD Off Road manual in Cement on order. =)

Pft, that’s a girl’s truck. A real man drives one of these (oh and /s obviously)

A stock F-350 parked in a diagonal space next
to me a while back, in my 325 wagon. This was the view out the window:
I think the hood was higher than my roof. Backing out of my space into the street, I was halfway across the street before I could see around behind his tailgate. Hell, I probably could almost see UNDER the bed.
![]() 07/11/2018 at 12:16 |

People with vehicles that big should pay extra for all the extra space they’re using.
![]() 07/11/2018 at 12:17 |
|
“If a vehicle honestly requires two spots to park, then find a place where you can take two spots.”
And also charge ‘em
twice as much for parking and twice as much for vehicle registration while we’re at it.
![]() 07/11/2018 at 12:19 |

Yeah those are a “if you continue to back up you’ll hit the building” blocks not sidewalk markers

Why are the new Superdutys so freaking huge! I understand the usefulness of a crew cab with an 8ft box I really do. However every new generation gets more rear legroom and a few inches taller and at this point it’s redicuous. Driving my FIL’s 2003 F-350 is a bit intimidating I can’t imagine driving one of these everyday. He just bought a 2014 and it even it dwarfs the 03 quite a bit.
![]() 07/11/2018 at 12:33 |
|
Counterpoint: My crew cab long bed will be the only vehicle actually parked in the lines in the parking lot many times, why should I pay more when I can actually park mine?
![]() 07/11/2018 at 12:34 |

They drive far easier than you would expect.
Source:
I own one. No issues parking or maneuvering.
![]() 07/11/2018 at 12:45 |

Trucks this size are the only vehicle I’m okay with parking in two spots. Any less and the passengers risk having to use an adjacent car as a step to get to the ground.

Because I want you to give me MOAR money!!!

This lot does charge extra for oversize vehicles if the attendant catches them when they pull into the lot. This guy arrived before the attendant did.

I wanted a Tacoma until I drove one. I felt like I was driving a portable cave.

I’ve heard that lots of people don’t like the seating position, but I was really comfortable when I drove them (two test drives).

Nope - my old Pathfinder is going to my brother.
![]() 07/11/2018 at 13:36 |

glad to hear you made your decision. I think you will be happy.
![]() 07/11/2018 at 13:48 |

It wasn’t so much the seating position. It just felt so dark inside and I felt like I was a mile away from all of the windows. It didn’t help that the rear seat windows were tinted. It also felt short, like my head was going to hit the headliner. I was coming from my B-3000 (Ranger) where there’s a ton of headroom and it feels spacious, but not gigantic. I don’t know. The one I drove just didn’t make me happy.

Thanks - I’m confident I will be! Planning to have it as a loyal “ companion” for many years to come - looking forward to lots of adventures; it will probably will be what my kids learn to drive on . I’ll make sure to share photos and first impressions once it’s here.
![]() 07/11/2018 at 14:16 |

Huh... I mean, it is significantly wid er than your Ranger. Did the one you drove have a moonroof?
![]() 07/11/2018 at 14:49 |

No moonroof. Dark Blue exterior, gray interior, long-bed, tinted windows. Beautiful on the outside. A cave on the inside.
![]() 07/11/2018 at 15:08 |

Well, at least you know what you don’t want! Have you driven a Colorado? I’m wondering how the new Ranger is going to stack up.

At 6'7", the Challenger is the only one of the big three muscle cars I fit in- and quite comfortably!
![]() 07/11/2018 at 16:06 |

Charge the dipshits who can’t park their compacts as well then. That way you’ll have ALL the money!

I sat in one of the first-gen Colorados. It was ok, but the seat was super-cheap.
I ended up listening to my wife and bought a WRX instead. Now instead of a truck, I use a small trailer which we pull behind our Outback.
I like having a zippy car, but I sure do miss my truck.
![]() 07/11/2018 at 16:52 |

I have a good-sized trailer as well, but I’m looking forward to having the Swiss-Army-knife- ness of a small truck on a daily basis.

That trim, probably $75,000
